Ritigala is an isolated range of forested peaks rising abruptly out of the plains north-east of Dambulla. Its cooler, wetter slopes have unusual plant life, and the mountain is protected as a strict nature reserve. At its foot lie the ruins of a monastery used by the Pamsukulika — "rag-robe" monks who lived in austere retreat — which flourished especially in the 9th century.
There are no great statues here. Instead, you follow a paved path through the jungle past a large bathing pool, a monastic hospital with stone medicine troughs, and the characteristic double platforms linked by stone bridges, used for meditation. In Sri Lankan legend, Ritigala is also one of the places where Hanuman dropped a piece of the Himalayas carrying healing herbs during the events of the Ramayana.
Top things to do at Ritigala
Walk the monastery path
The main path runs uphill for about a kilometre through the forest, linking the pools, hospital, platforms and a small roundabout-like junction. Allow 1.5–2 hours.
Look for the medicine troughs
The hospital area has stone basins where patients may have been immersed in herbal oils — an echo of the healing-herb legend.

- Combine it: Ritigala fits neatly into a day with a Habarana-area safari.

These top-rated experiences are the easiest way to see Ritigala:
Jeep safari from US$26 Hurulu Eco Park Jeep Safari & Entrance Ticket Included
Hurulu Eco Park is the forest reserve next to Habarana, and in the months when Minneriya is thin on elephants it is often where the herds are. The price already includes the entrance fees, which makes it one of the simplest safaris to book.
- Park tickets included — no surprises at the gate
- Quieter forest safari with fewer jeeps
- Good elephant sightings outside the gathering season
Private safari from US$33 Kaudulla National Park Half-Day Private Jeep Safari
Kaudulla is Minneriya’s quieter neighbour, linked by an elephant corridor, and late in the dry season it often holds the bigger herds. A private jeep means you decide how long to stay with each family group — the reason this tour scores so highly.
- A private jeep just for your group
- Kaudulla’s herds around its ancient reservoir
- Pickup across Habarana, Sigiriya and Dambulla
