Sigiriya rock on the horizon above the ponds and paths of a resort near Sigiriya

Where to Stay in Dambulla

Stay in the Cultural Triangle and you are on the rock at dawn and on safari by afternoon. Here is where to sleep.

Most people see Dambulla on a rushed day trip. Staying two or three nights changes everything: Sigiriya or Pidurangala at sunrise, the Cave Temple in the quiet late afternoon, and an elephant safari when the herds come out.

There are three good bases, all within about 30 minutes of each other. Sigiriya for dawn climbs and some of the island’s finest nature hotels; Dambulla and Kandalama for the Cave Temple, buses and lake-view resorts; and Habarana for the elephant parks and Polonnaruwa.

Guest scores are Trip.com’s (out of 5) and rates are indicative starting prices per room per night in US dollars; they change constantly with season and demand — every card links out to Trip.com for live availability.

Booking tips

  • From December to April and in August, the best hotels around Sigiriya sell out — book several weeks ahead.
  • Many resorts are outside the towns; check how far you are from the Sigiriya entrance or the Cave Temple before you book.
  • Ask your hotel to arrange safari jeeps — they collect from the door and know which park is best that week.
  • Air conditioning is essential most of the year; a pool is worth paying for in the hot months.
