Pidurangala Rock

The best view of Sigiriya

Pidurangala is Sigiriya’s older, quieter twin, a kilometre or so to the north. Monks lived in its caves long before Kashyapa built his palace, and a working temple — the Pidurangala Raja Maha Viharaya — still sits at its foot. Halfway up is a large reclining Buddha made of brick, partly restored, sheltered under a rock overhang.

The reason most people come, though, is the summit: a broad granite dome with an unobstructed view across the forest to Sigiriya rock. At sunrise, with mist in the jungle, it is one of the great views in Sri Lanka.

Top things to do at Pidurangala Rock

Climb for sunrise or sunset

The path takes 30–45 minutes: stone steps through forest, then a short scramble over boulders that requires using your hands. Bring a headtorch for a sunrise climb.

Visit the reclining Buddha

On the way up, the large brick reclining Buddha under the overhang is easy to miss in the dark — look for it on the way down.

See the temple at the base

The ticket is sold at the temple, and the white stupa and shrine room at the foot of the rock are worth a few minutes.

How to get to Pidurangala Rock

  • From Sigiriya village: about 1.5 km from the Sigiriya entrance — 10 minutes by tuk-tuk or a 20–30 minute walk.
  • From Dambulla: about 30–40 minutes by tuk-tuk; for sunrise, book the driver the night before or take a guided sunrise hike with pickup.

Insider tips

  • Wear shoes with grip: the final scramble is over smooth rock and can be slippery after rain.
  • Cover shoulders and knees when you pass the temple at the base.
  • The entrance fee is modest (around LKR 1,000 for foreigners — check on the day).
  • Sunrise brings a crowd to the summit in high season; sunset is often quieter.

Pidurangala Rock FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is Pidurangala difficult?

Mostly easy steps, then five to ten minutes of scrambling over boulders at the top. It is fine for most people, but not for anyone who needs to avoid climbing with their hands.

Is Pidurangala better than Sigiriya?

Different. Pidurangala is cheaper, quieter and gives you the famous view of Sigiriya; Sigiriya itself has the frescoes, lion paws and palace. Many travellers do Pidurangala at sunrise and Sigiriya after breakfast.

What time is sunrise at Pidurangala?

Sri Lanka is close to the equator, so sunrise is always roughly between 5:45 and 6:30. Start climbing 45 minutes before.
